Statement of intent
I decided to choose the first brief which was about making a magazine cover and a double page spread article about a specific artist that I had chosen from my group of friends.
I will use different techniques of mise-en-scene and different camera shots such as close ups to focus on a specific details in a specific picture and long shots to try to implement as much elements in a photo. At this stage I am thinking about using my classmate Adam as the main model of this magazine and have the well-known DJ Marshmello as his idol. When I'm writing this my ideas are still really early in development and there may be lots of factors and ideas that will change in the future. As of now I'll have to do a lot of research about media theories such as orientalism by Edward Said, which includes the idea of ethnic minorities being demonised in media. As a white male, I feel like Adam might be a very good example for a model.
Furthermore, my target audience is teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18, which makes Marshmello an amazing idol to be used, as he is a world-wide known Dj enjoyed by a lot of teenagers. Using Adam as the model in this magazine sounds as an amazing idea because, after all, he is only 15 years old making the age group this magazine is for feel attracted to him.
Moreover, at the time I’m writing this, I’m thinking about Adam’s story and how he had become who he is. I have two main ideas. The first one is about Adam being an aspiring artist who is confused about his intentions and reason of becoming an artist, and the second one is also about Adam just being a regular teenager that one decide to make a song similar to Marshmello’s and for some reason had become a cerlebrity over the night. So far I’m leaning more towards the second idea, but I might change my opinion over the time.
Overall, I think I have a good idea of what I would like my magazine to look like and what kinds of elements I’ll use in it, but a lot of research will have to be done in the near future.
