Statement of intent

Statement of intent

I decided to choose the first brief which was about making a magazine cover and a double page spread article about a specific artist that I had chosen from my group of friends.

I will use different techniques of mise-en-scene and different camera shots such as close ups to focus on a specific details in a specific picture and long shots to try to implement as much elements in a photo. At this stage I am thinking about using my classmate Adam as the main model of this magazine and have the well-known DJ Marshmello as his idol. When I'm writing this my ideas are still really early in development and there may be lots of factors and ideas that will change in the future. As of now I'll have to do a lot of research about media theories such as orientalism by Edward Said, which includes the idea of ethnic minorities being demonised in media. As a white male, I feel like Adam might be a very good example for a model.

Furthermore, my target audience is teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18, which makes Marshmello an amazing idol to be used, as he is a world-wide known Dj enjoyed by a lot of teenagers. Using Adam as the model in this magazine sounds as an amazing idea because, after all, he is only 15 years old making the age group this magazine is for feel attracted to him.

Moreover, at the time I’m writing this, I’m thinking about Adam’s story and how he had become who he is. I have two main ideas. The first one is about Adam being an aspiring artist who is confused about his intentions and reason of becoming an artist, and the second one is also about Adam just being a regular teenager that one decide to make a song similar to Marshmello’s and for some reason had become a cerlebrity over the night. So far I’m leaning more towards the second idea, but I might change my opinion over the time.

Overall, I think I have a good idea of what I would like my magazine to look like and what kinds of elements I’ll use in it, but a lot of research will have to be done in the near future.

Intertextuality research

Lesson Objective:
K: The concept of intertextuality.U: How the concept of intertextuality is used in media texts.BAT: Analyse media texts using intertextuality.CO: Use media terminology throughout.

Intertextuality simply means creating one text in reference to another.  Intertextuality can also happen when the content of one media text makes reference to another.
Intertextuality is not always obvious. References can only be recognised if you know what  they are referring to. There are also cultural, social and linguistic limitations

Now... Can you find two examples of media texts (pictures for magazines/websites, footage for music video) and explain why it is important for media producers to embrace this concept?

Casting

In this post I will describe what makes my main model and actor suitable for my magazine cover.

Location Information

The point of this post is to make me identify the places where I want to shoot photos to use in my music based magazine cover and the double sheet spread article. I have an idea about the locations that I want to use, but by making this post I can assure the best places for me to take photos in to have the best outcome possible for my post.

Useful information:
   Model - Adam Taylor
   Genre- music magazine
Colour scheme - Gradient of a light colours to a dark colours
   Time - during weekends preferably
Place - 60% it will be in school and 40% at Adam's place

Adam's Living room

This was the initial place where we wanted to take the pictures, but unfortunately something happened and we weren't able to meet up and do this, so we decided to take the pictures at school.
The only problem with this place is that me and Adam live quite far away from each other which will make it quite hard for us to meet up.

Locker Bay

After we failed to meet up, we decided to take our photos in school. In our opinion, the locker Bays were not a bad idea, but we decided not to take them here due to the bad lighting and background.

Green Screen in media class

A green screen. Such an obvious idea. How did we not think of this? Oh wait...This was the first place that we wanted to use, but I wanted to get fancy and original. In the end, after numerous failures we decided to just use a green screen and change the background to brown. Good lighting, place and camera, the only problem was that we could get in this class only once a week.

Make sure these are realistic so that you can stick to your plan as much as you can.

Plenary
  • Why do you think it's important to produce a schedule of activities when working on a production?
If you make a schedule before you start your actual task than it will be easier to manage your activities and so you can be more organised with your tasks, helping you save time.
  • Name 3 activities you're likely to struggle with?
-The creation of the magazine cover in photoshop.
-The creation of the double page article in photoshop.
-The management of my time for each individual task.
  • What are you going to do in order to achieve these difficult activities?
-I will try to use photoshop a bit more so that I get used of it, making it easier for me to create my magazine cover and double page article.
-I will do all my activities, trying to give each of them as much time as I can and at the same time  I will be trying not to fall behind my classmates.

Product Style Profile

Product Style Profile

In this post I will look at the importance of sketches and planning in the decision making process of creating a magazine. I will also try to use sketches to influence my stylistic decisions. Moreover, I will undertake a creative task in which I start the decision of making process in terms of style of my magazine.

Feedback

"Your designs show how many ideas you had at the start of this project"

"Those designs show that you tried multiple ideas and by asking others you have decided which one you will use for your final magazine cover".

Plenary

This green screen will definitely be used in my final product as the background for the magazine cover. Ideally, its colour will be changed to brown or cream.

My mood board

  • I chose the first brief and I have to create a front cover and a double page spread article for an entertainment music magazine aimed at an audience of 14 – 18 year olds. My idea is to make magazine front cover and a double spread article that is base on showing people the best music to listen to while doing their hobbies. Also this magazine will be based on music such as rock, rap and dubstep.
  • In this task I'll explore different types of images, fonts and colours to use in my magazine cover and double spread article.  I shall be looking at different connotations and how these affect the way my target audience might view my product.  By creating this mood board I will also be exploring creative ways of how to present my work.

TASK 5 - When you finish the mood boards you need analyse them answering the following questions:

  • How did they helped you define content for your product?
My mood board helped me by showing me more inside details about the rap genre and why people enjoy listening to it.
  • What will be your overall colour scheme of your production?
It will either be based on warm tones such as orange and red or a white and black scheme with hints of vibrant colours such as turquois or cyan.
  • What kind of images/shots would you use in your production?
A mix of mid and close up shots with a few long shots.
  • What kind of fonts would you use in your production?
A modern/ hipster font.
  • What kind of mise-en-scene would you use in your production?
Props such as microphones and lights that connote celebrities and their intentions.
  • What kind of intertextuality would you use in your production?
I will try to make references to celebrities by using pictures of the clothes that they wear and things that people see them having most of the time.
  • Which media theory(ies) are you likely to use in your production?
Female gaze by Gamman and Marshment where attractive men are used to attract women in reading the magazine.

Survey

Click this link for the survey-https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GF8NGDT
(I'm sorry if the answers below are not in order. Blogger was not working how its supposed to)

TASK 5

Task 5 - Review your results and copy and paste any graphs or charts given by survey monkey.  Then you need to write up your findings in paragraph form including how you intend to use the information collated in your questionnaire.
You can use the questions below to help you write your analysis:
  • What did you find useful about the information collated?
  • How are you going to use the information collated to establish/define a target audience for your product?
  • What does your audience expect to see in the product you're going to create?
  • How are you going to use the information collated to come up with designs and house-styles for your product?

From my questionnaire I have noticed that the people that took this survey are between the ages of 11 and 15 and the photography that most people are interested in is really spread, most of them preferring close ups and mid shots. Also there is more males than females that took the survey. Also a lot of people enjoy listening to either rap or rock music and quite enjoy sports as one of their hobbies next to cooking. Furthermore, the people that took the survey are mostly white that prefer playing sports games such as fifa or 2k and enjoy warm tones on their magazine front cover.

Using this information I can decide on what kind of music people would prefer listening to while doing sports or cooking or playing games that is preferably rock or rap.

I think that people are expecting a magazine that recommends people what kind of rock or rap music they should listen to while doing their hobbies. Also the theme of the magazine should be based on warm tones such as red, orange or yellow.

Task 6 - DEFINE YOUR AUDIENCE
The last piece of writing you need to do should be an explanation of who your target audience actually is now... Please define your audience by gender, age, socio-economic class, likes and dislikes.

My target are teenagers with the ages between 11 and 18 years old that can be any race or gender that prefer doing sports or playing game while listening to music. Also those people are fans of rock or rap music and prefer more warm tones or vibrant colours.

My Audience

My Audience

  • Name 5 ways in which audiences can be categorised.
Ways which audiences can be categorised are: age, race, gender, interest, religion.
  • Why do you think it's important for media producers to categories audiences?
I think that media producers categorise audiences to make sure that they release content that will appeal to every person. This is important because by doing this, the media producers will produce a lot of money that will help them with further projects.
  • What is the target audience as described in your chosen brief?
In my brief i will try to make my product appeal to teenagers of any race with the ages between 14 and 18 years old.
  • Give a short explanation as to your understanding of the target audience given in your chosen brief.
I think that a magazine based on Electronica music will be enjoyable to the teenagers that like listening to mechanic sounds. I feel like other teenagers that want to become DJs would find this magazine enjoyable.
